CMMC and Cybersecurity Awareness Month Kickoff
CMMC and Cybersecurity Awareness Month Kickoff
October marks the beginning of Cybersecurity Awareness Month, a time when organizations across industries take stock of their security posture and strengthen defenses against evolving cyber threats. For companies within the Defense Industrial Base (DIB), one compliance framework sits at the heart of readiness: the Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification (CMMC).
What is CMMC?
The Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification is the Department of Defense’s (DoD) unified standard to ensure contractors and subcontractors safeguard Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI) and Federal Contract Information (FCI). With today’s heightened risk landscape and nation-state actors targeting supply chains, CMMC serves as a critical line of defense against data compromise and advanced persistent threats (APTs).
The Three CMMC Levels
CMMC is not a one-size-fits-all framework. Instead, it uses a tiered model to align cybersecurity maturity with the sensitivity of information being handled:
- Level 1: Foundational – Focuses on basic cyber hygiene practices to protect FCI. Requires a self-assessment.
- Level 2: Advanced – Aligns with NIST SP 800-171. Requires a triennial third-party assessment by a C3PAO.
- Level 3: Expert – Designed for high-value assets and contracts exposed to APTs. Assessed directly by the government.
Who Needs to Comply?
Any prime contractor or subcontractor working within the DoD supply chain will need to demonstrate compliance. Importantly, requirements cascade: if a prime is required to meet Level 2 or Level 3, their subcontractors may also be required to meet those same standards.
Key Aspects of Compliance
- Information Protection – The core mission is protecting FCI and CUI against cyber threats.
- DFARS Clause – Certification must be achieved before contract award.
- Supply Chain Security – Compliance doesn’t stop at the prime—it applies across the entire supply chain.
Preparing for CMMC Compliance
For organizations navigating CMMC, preparation is everything:
- Determine Your Level: Identify the CMMC level required in your target DoD contracts.
- Identify Assets: Map all systems and devices handling CUI/FCI.
- Implement Controls: Align with NIST SP 800-171 practices and your required CMMC level.
- Document & Train: Policies and training ensure compliance is embedded into operations.
- Get Assessed: Schedule your required assessment—whether self, third-party, or government-led.
Why CMMC Matters Now
Cybersecurity is no longer optional—it’s a strategic advantage. By achieving CMMC compliance, contractors not only unlock eligibility for DoD contracts but also demonstrate resilience, reliability, and trustworthiness in today’s volatile threat environment.
As
Cybersecurity Awareness Month begins, it’s the perfect time for defense contractors to assess their readiness, close gaps, and begin the journey toward compliance.
